1. Chase/Getting Together

  • B. Storylines initiated by sex

Other than being doujinshi fodder, this storyline type actually does exist as a separate category. If we consider real life as an example, I’m sure there are a lot of couples out there that started as a drunken one night stand (though the results are usually that you wake up in the morning and find to your horror that the beer goggles have slipped off during the night). I suppose if you can still hold a barely intelligible conversation on the morning after and neither one of you finds the other completely vomitously repulsive you’re pretty much in there. I hear.

Probably unique to the doujinshi genre and indeed unique to the Japanese fiction genre are storylines initiated by rape. It is an unusual thing to see in other parts of the world, since rape is seen of as one of the most heinous crimes, so anything depicting something good coming out of it is likely to be viewed with at least some raised eyebrows. However, I’m not going to go there today (I think I’ve gone into it enough with my Fetish Month posts). Rape is an extremely popular storyline in doujinshi (and indeed probably the most common of all the storylines). In the world of doujinshi, rape isn’t viewed as non-consensual sex, rather “sex that she didn’t know she wanted” (in the words of a Danbooru commenter). I guess that in the world of fantasy that is doujinshi and manga, it is feasible that a girl is raped by chance by the one person that she would actually like to be with. Or alternatively, in doujinshi/mangaworld, since there is no risk of pregnancy (unless that’s the author’s fetish) all girls love getting raped by anyone and everyone all the time.

I mean, if I was 2D and fictional and had a vagina and breasts, I know I’d love it. But after a while it might become tedious. Anyway.

The different types of storylines that may result are:

  • 1. Relationships developing from a one night stand

Surprisingly, one-night stands don’t happen a whole lot in mangaworld (though raping happens far more). This is probably because one-night stands are a very “adult” thing to happen, whereas most characters in manga or anime are of high school age or younger and therefore, it wouldn’t make sense for them to be having one-night stands. They’re more likely to get drunk and pass out rather than get drunk and hit on the girl they’ve had a crush on.

However, there are a few. Stories such as The Azure Dream by Morishima Akiko details such a liaison – between a straight girl who sleeps with a lesbian after getting very drunk after work (I suppose the girls must do something while the men are dancing round with the ties round their heads.) This storyline could also be classified as a Type G (self-discovery), but since the main mechanic is the hawt sex, I would put it here.

  • 2. Relationships developing from (yuri) rape.

Probably the most common storyline in doujinshi (and if there was a consensual sex category, then you’d expect there to be a non-consensual one as well ^^). This category includes both overt yuri rape (where a girl is eaten out against her will – though how one has an orgasm when she doesn’t want it is a mystery to me) and “Mildly protesting” yuri rape, where a girl comes onto another girl and the other girl doesn’t protest too much at having her clothes ripped off and getting her bits fondled against her will.

One example of the latter (the former is taken almost completely by doujinshi which have no real storyline to speak of) is Morinaga Milk’s To the one I Hate (Chapters 1 and 7) which details the storyline of a half-sister that comes to live with a struggling poor family in the suburbs and starts off trying to wreak her revenge on them by breaking up the family and raping the eldest sister but ends up falling in love with her instead. Aww. Bet the father never saw that one coming…pseudo half incest for the win.

Question: Would Yukino/Setsuko of Octave be a case of 1B-1 or would it be a case of seduction/self-discovery(1G(?)), or are there blended classifications? And this is just my opinion but I think the type should depend a great deal on our point of view character. If it is from the “virgin’s” vantage point I think it clearly should be a 1G(?), but if it from seductress’s or a neutral one a 1B-1 is apt. I hope I am not stepping on your toes with this, I just find this fascinating.
