Analysing the yuri potential in K-ON!
Posted on | July 8, 2009 | 15 Comments |
So following my post analysing the yuri potential in Saki (of which there is plenty), I thought I’d follow it up with a similar post on possibly the most over-liked animation of all time – K-ON!. Not that I’m knocking it – I can see where the logic in animating K-ON! came from…
Haruhi Live episode went down well –> Haruhi music sold well –> let’s animate something about music –> Let’s animate K-ON!
Sound about right?
In my own humble opinion, K-ON!’s storyline and characters leave a lot to be desired. Of them all, only perhaps Mio and Azusa stand out through their moe power, but characters like Yui and Ritsu have been done to death. Tsumugi is quite interesting but very one-dimensional and doesn’t get enough lines for you to really empathise with her character. Same goes for Sawako – she only really has one quirk, so there’s only so much that you can do with it.
OK, maybe I’m just jealous of Yui.
Anyway, it’s no surprise that there’s yuri potential in the series, since it centres around an all-female group. However, the actual yuri content of the series, unlike Saki is disappointingly low. There are a number of points where if the mangaka had gone that one step further, it would have been loser fanboy eye-candy – but he chose not to and keep the story away from the Dark side.
But hey, that doesn’t stop us from making loads of stuff up!!
Yui x Azusa
Type: Sempai admiration/total blockhead
Yes, I know that Yui hugs everyone, but there’s no one that reacts to it better than Azusa, who obviously secretly admires (and is jealous of) Yui’s innate guitar playing mad skillz. So the fact that Yui keeps hugging her and telling her she’s cute and giving her cute nicknames probably can’t help her pure maiden heart…which is going to be heart broken one day when she finds out that Tsumugi got there first.
Mio x Azusa
Type: Sempai admiration
In terms of a proper friends relationship, Azusa is probably closest to Mio (since she’s the only other sane member of the group), so it’s only natural that after a long intensive guitar practice session alone in Mio’s room there would be some hot and heavy lesbian loving. With cat ears. And tails. Attached to buttplugs. *shakes head violently* I’ve been reading too many K-ON! doujinshi… –_-
Tsumugi x All
Poor Tsumugi – she gets the least airtime of the central four girls AND she has tsukimono for eyebrows. She plays a rather one-dimensional ojousama-who-wants-real-friends character and she’s pretty hazy on what real female-female relationships should be like. And after that K-ON doujin I can’t help but think of her “re-educating” poor innocent Yui. She probably read somewhere in one of her father’s magazines that cunnilingus is the only way to maintain friendships.
Sawako x Mio
Type: Pure molestation
So, the only other dimension to Sawako’s character than she’s a secret goth/hair metal freakazoid is that she’s a closet cosplay fetishist. Following in the footsteps of the late great Tomoyo Daidouji, no doubt. It seems that she has this attribute for two reasons – so that we can see the girls in pretty clothes and so that Mio gets placed in loads of compromising situations getting her underclothes ripped off by a music teacher burning with passion.
Sounds rather like another activity involving two women, nudity and burning passion. But with rather less effort and expense. And you get to smoke a cigarette afterwards while the girl you raped shivers like her whole body is dirty. Ah Shizuru, you taught us well…
Yui x Ui
Type: Incestual sisterly love
The relationship shared between siblings Ui and Yui is not only one of sisterly love between sisters whose parents decided to give them names that are almost the same. In fact, the image of Ui – the pretty, mature one cooking, cleaning and caring for the slobby unkempt prodigy Yui who slobs around in front of the TV and demands beer… I mean ice cream… is rather reminiscent of a husband wife relationship.
So it’s no surprise that a lot of fanshippers think that sometimes late at night, things go on in the bedroom that are also reminiscent of a husband and wife. Yes, that’s right, domestic violence. I mean…hot and heavy S&M sex. Ui is obviously the Dom.
Mio x Ritsu
Type: Osananajimi
Actually my least favourite pairing, mainly because I think Ritsu is an idiot. This follows the same old well trodden paths of osananajimi = secret crush relised through teasing and animosity. Makes me want to do a population survey in Japan to see how many people actually marry their childhood friends.
Their coupling is very similar to another Baka x Bishoujo couple – Tomo x Yomi of Azumanga fame. But everyone knows that even if Mio pushed Ritsu down onto the bed and shoved her crotch into her childhood friend’s face, Ritsu would probably make a fish-related joke and Mio would slap her one.
Ui x Azusa
It could happen.

I think you’d better leave some doujin names so we can research K-On’s yuri potential more properly…

Ui x Azusa=It could happen. Well anything can happen when there are all girls in an anime/manga. ;) I actually support more of Yui x Ui pairing. Sister love is the best.

Will you be analyzing the yuri potential of Aoi Hana next?

Well, I pretty much seen Yui tearing up every K-On! girl in many doujins that I’ve seen. But my three favorite pairings would be Sawako/Mio, Ristu/Mio, or Sawako showing Mugi how deep girl bonding can really go.
Ui/Azusa would be interesting if Yui happened to walk-in and make it a three way.
But Yui is Mai Waifu and since she never gains weight she won’t find out about our love child until it’s way too late.

Actually, Mio and Ritsu remind me of an old couple just like Yui and Ui.
Ritsu’s the idiot that Mio always has to bail out and slap, just like a forceful wife and her idiot husband.
Still, when they do interact when Ritsu gets sick, it’s interesting to see that they know each other so well that Ritsu can just tell Mio’s coming through the doors just by the footsteps- something pretty common with family members but probably not so much as friends.

All of your posts are crazy entertaining! I also agree with the MugixSawako-sensei pairing. For a couple episodes Mugi was pretty infatuated with her.
I showed some of my K-on fanatic friends this post and they loved it! LOL!

Hehe your summation of relationships is wonderful in it’s own special way – I may link this article later when I have a place for it! Thank you!
And I agree with your take on Ritsu/Mio – I don’t particularly understand the immense following behind it either.

Uha i dont know, i actually like the Mio/Ritsu pairing very much, because at least Ritsu’s presence DID change Mio’s personality for good.
Still another pairing i like is the Mugi/Ritsu! It’s reaaaaaaally sweet XD
