First post of the revival – Reasons why watching Nanoha StrikerS will shake your faith in God.

| Yes, Nanoha, Fate and Hayate are legal now you lolipedofins. Not sure if that’s a good thing or a bad one.
OK, first things first – I am back ^_^. Thank you all you people who visited while I was away – We seem to have hit 1 million hits while I was incapacitated, so good work everyone – gokurousama deshita.
Second things second – it is my birthday today! *bows and absorbs applause* Thank you all. Post your birthday gifts to…nah, I wouldn’t do that to ya – you hardly know me ^_^.
And lastly, almost as an afterthought we come to the post. In the time I have been away, almost a whole season has come and gone. The new season shows I am tentatively trying are Doujin Work which is fairly hilarious, Moe-tan which is moelicious, Zero no Tsukaima (2nd season) I’m not sure why (since I was not particularly enamoured of the first), Umisho (for the fanservice) and Higurashi no naku koro ni kai (even though I still haven’t finished series 1)
But by far the most surprising thing I seem not to be watching is Nanoha StrikerS.

| Things that are good 1 – Ginga is awesomely cool. Especially when compared to her irritating brat of a sister.
Most of you avid readers should know that I am head over arse bonkers about the Nanoha franchise. I loved the original series and I fell even deeper in love with A’s. But half a season into StrikerS, I have become almost scared of watching another episode of the pile of filth that Nanoha is being dragged through – scared that each episode will singularly fail to pull the series out of the deep dark pit of rubbishness that it is currently sinking into. Scared that the next episode will somehow impossibly manage to be more boring than the last. Scared that they’ll never actually get past the introduction stage and into some real nitty gritty.
Basically, I am extremely disappointed with Nanoha StrikerS. So far in the first 13 episodes, there has been absolutely nothing that has gripped my attention and if this was a normal series, I wouldn probably have given up on it by episode 1. I’m even starting to come round to Triad’s way of thinking. They were right to abandon this series. In fact, the people who came up with the concepts for the third series should be hunted down and red hot needles shoved into their eye sockets. Every week. See how they like it.
Basically, what is wrong with Nanoha StrikerS can be summarised in a few key points:
- Not enough Nanoha – Surely the high point of the first two series was waiting for Nanoha to charge up that big assed attack and ’splode things up. Never mind about the landscape, it’s all in the name of interdimensional peace baby! So why o why o why in this series has Nanoha’s rank been downgraded so that her attacks barely blow up an asthmatic flea? And then additionally cut random exposition sequences over her battles so that you can’t see those fleas being blown up in the first place? WHY?
- Not enough Fate, Hayate, Velka knights etc.etc.etc. Ditto.

| Things that are good 2 – Caro is cute and needs to have all otaku men in the world’s babies.
- Not enough battles – If you look in ANN for Nanoha, one of the categories that it falls under is “military”. Military means battles. Battles means blowing stuff up. Battles means fighting between PEOPLE. People, you know. Not people and stupid stupid robots. People and people. What does StrikerS lack that the previous series have? I think you’re beginning to get the point. Doing random techniques that shoot down various crappy robots doesn’t get the adrenaline flowing like an epic two episode battle between equals like the Nanoha/Fate battle in late series 1 (the best one, IMHO) Does that last Starlight Breaker send shivers down your spine? It still does to me ^_^
- Not enough technique names – It’s bad enough that the techniques used to defeat the crappy robots are random, but the crappy random techniques don’t even have crappy names half the time. I don’t know about anyone else, but I love the part of the battles where Nanoha or one of the other mages sweeps out their device and the magic circle forms as the device deadpans out the technique name. I don’t know what it is about it but it gives the sequence drama. Somehow, in getting rid of half of these occurrences, the battle drama is now down so low I might as well be watching slug wrestling.

| Things that are good 3 – Loli Arf replaces Buxom Arf. Actually, in retrospect, I think I prefer buxom Arf. But this way round, I think I like Fate/Arf better. Go figure.
- Too much practice – Oh YAY another episode of TRAINING. What have we done to deserve such INTERESTING fun-filled material. Adn the best part about it – the interpersonal battles where they fight Nanoha – apart from the first two – they’re all cut out as well! Fantastic.
- Too many new characters – The first series had basically 6 characters. (Nanoha, Fate, Chrono, Yuuno, Lindy and Amy). The second series added 8 (the Velka knights and Hayate, General and Aria/Lotte). This has worked fine with regards to storyline. Will someone please tell the idiots at the production company that adding 5 billion new characters does not make the storyline 5 billion times more interesting.
- Too much politics – I quite frankly couldn’t give a monkey’s crap about the politics in the TSAB. It’s a boring and badly executed storyline that tries to lend some deeper subplot to a series which has prided itself on having a simple effective storyline of – bad guy, get defeated by bad guy, get stronger, defeat bad guy, find out bad guys are good guys, defeat uber bad guy and win. The extra story nonsense means more and more episodes of long drawn out exposition when the team could be out battling with some of the humanoid enemies and exploding some stuff with Starlight Breaker. It doesn’t help that the exposition is so slow that I lose track of what the hell is going on from episode to episode either…

| Things that are good 4 – At least there is some yuri. THANK GOD.
I’m sure I’ve missed something out in that list. There’s just so many things wrong with that show that I can’t list them all in one sitting. If there’s anything else I’ve missed out, please feel free to add it in on the comments box and I might edit it in later.
Basically, Nanoha StrikerS, in extending itself to 26 episodes has lost sight of some of the simplicity and awesomeness that made two fantastic series and a mahou shouji classic. Although the pickings look to be thin, I shall be holding out til the end of the series just to make sure that it doesn’t go awesome at the last minute (like Mai HiME – I’m sure the introductions to that series went on til about episode 18). At the end, I will probably be publishing a guide to the episodes you should watch to keep from getting bored and smashing up the room, so wait for that…
Now excuse me while I go torrent Episode 15.

So while it’s recommended that I watch the first two series (some day, some day) I can give this one a pass?
Good to know…

QFT.
There was once or twice I thought it would pick up. Then it didn’t go anywhere after all.
And seriously, we all know the only proper way to train in a series like this is WITH A MONTAGE!

I still watch it. I may be a masochist. Or maybe it has to do with our newest loli Vivio, who now has 2 mothers (Fate and Nanoha, of course).
Nanoha, Vivio, and Fate all sleep in the same bed.
Yeah, I’ll keep watching.

I gotta agree with you Yuribou. As much as I love the Nanoha series I have to agree theres just too many problems with this series. Yet I still watch it and I still enjoy it. Maybe because just recently the series started to pick up in episode 16, and episode 17 I really enjoyed because thats where the shit hits the fan. Finally in episode 18 when we get to see the new opening Massive Wonders you can see that in the coming episodes there will be plenty of fights one on one and not against drones . Which should make anyone happy who’s kept with the series, so I’ll keep my final verdict on Strikers untill I’ve seen the last episode.

Hyosuke – that is good news my friend, good news. Let’s hope they don’t screw it all up in the interim

I’m afraid I’m one of the tiny minority who has been actually enjoying StrikerS even while acknowledging its weaknesses. Yes, badly paced, yes, too much training, yes, too little Nanoha… but the characters are great. I would happily watch Nanoha-tachi doing next to nothing as long as they did next to nothing in character. Which they have been doing. Thus I am content.
Oh, and there are other positives as well. Nanoha and Fate as adult I like. Nanoha and Fate as married I like. ^_^ The whole military thing is nicely set up, and is making sense now in the wider plot context.
Finally, gotta agree with Hyosuke – episode 17 was epic. It absolutely blew me away, and that was just watching the RAW eye-cancer version. Bouncing away from that one on an adrenaline high was what made me think that StrikerS had finally hit its action stride. Hang on in there, Yuribou. It’s worth the wait.
July 31st, 2007 @ 10:06 am
Haruchin you just proved I’m not the only one who feels that way. So you watched the RAW eye-cancer version as well, lol. Well you know what they say happens to good people who wait. ^_^

I don’t think there’s a person on this planet that didn’t get bored by the first half of this series. Hell, even the makers got bored. You can tell when the art becomes so poor not even the smallest budget could excuse it.
I agree with pretty much everything apart from the part about politics. I quite like that – it’s good to see Nanoha & co grown up and in the real world (as far as that statement can stretch) and I think I’d be more disappointed if we just had a re-run of the first series but with older characters.
I haven’t seen ahead into the raws so the last two I watched are yesy’s subs of 14 & 15, and with these two for the first time in the series I have been officially excited and eager to see the next episode. But 13 episodes of introductions? Bad bad bad. I think there are a lot of series that have too much content for 13 episodes, but too little for 24/26 episodes, and StrikerS is a prime example of this.

awww man if you knoly knew how much better it got
August 6th, 2007 @ 8:04 pm
What yuri?
August 8th, 2007 @ 12:03 am
I told you! The start of StrikerS is like the if they decide to make shark jumping an olympic event!
So it gets better? What ep should I start up on, because I’d love to not have to give up on Raging Heart and deadpan attacks.
…
Oh and I think you made a typo:
“Moe-tan which is moelicious”
You obviously meant to say:
“Moe-tan which is lolilicious”
