Fluff of this season #2 – Doujin Work – a jewel amongst dung

| The only thing that could make Doujin work better – random yuri.

In complete contrast to my first post in this series on Umisho, I will now proceeed to make a complete 360 degree turnaround to talk about one of my beloved series of this season – Doujin Work.

Doujin Work is a series about making doujinshi. It is not the only series that has ever dealt with this as its sole storyline, Comic Party springs instantly to mind, and several other series also make references to Comiket culture (Genshiken, Lucky Star). Comparing Doujin Work and Comic party howeer, there is one major difference that results in Doujin Work being made of win. OK, maybe two.

One thing that I believe more than anything is that doujinshi is purely about the ero-hon (hentai manga). Anything else is just a pretence. Doujinshi is about rape, tentacles and loli. It’s about either uninspired or unintelligible storylines transparently masking what is in all intents and purposes – pornography. Porn without plot, if you will. The one thing that Comic Party seems to want to portray is that people will intentionally go to Comic Markets in order to purchase non-ero doujinshi. This is a fallacy.

I know that there are lots of good non-ero doujinshi out there, but go with me, I’m on a roll ^_^

| Hehe, do it yourself bakunyuu

Doujin Work is great since it cuts to the chase with no pretence that the doujinshi that Tsuyuri draws is about bloomer rape. Fairly standard fare, if you ask me. What is then even more amusing is that our lovely flat-chested protagonist Najimi then proceeds to mistakenly believe that she can make her fortune drawing bad doujinshi that she is ashamed to pick up and read.

The second thing that is great about Doujin Work is that it didn’t have the annoying male protagonist. Anime companies should know that they are always on shaky ground with me and male protagonists. Unless they are well done and not just there to date all the girls, I can get violent. And you don’t want to see me violent when I’ve got my hands on a clothes horse, rubber bands and 15 metres of duct tape, trust me.

Let me go through the things that are awesome about Doujin Work.

| Loose as Richard o’Brien’s leather based undergarments.

  • The OP sequence is upbeat and crazy and fits the show perfectly. The ED is fairly good and has random dancing from the back which I approve of.
  • Najimi is hilarious when she keeps forcing herself to read the porn. Don’t force it, just let it wash over you ^_~
  • Tsuyuri is great – a great new character type that I’m sure hasn’t been done before (Major – Quiet(mysterious)/Minor – soft spoken, otaku, precocious). Like Yuki on acid.
  • Justice and his militant protection of Najimi’s virginity is laudable and random man-who-is-Najimi’s-fan is so a parody of the protagonist from Comic Party it keeps me entertained long into those summer nights.
  • Sora, for token loli. Banzai! Banzai!
  • The show itself is only 10 minutes long. Great for those ADHD children and people who have really fatigued eyelids.

All in all, Doujin work wins. What’s left to see is if they can keep that level of comedy up for the rest of the series, but at the moment, it’s my “Fluff of the Month”.

I agree with your last point most especially.
I had to show some new season anime to my friend after a hard night’s gigging, and Doujin Work was short & sweet (not to mention downright hilarious!) enough for us to watch eps while fatigued as heck.
    Good times! ^_^

I’ve just discovered this blog via a friend’s referral. Please forgive the necro comments! (BGM ♪ Necro-fantasy)

Loving the blog, but I really can’t help but strongly disagree on this point: “The one thing that Comic Party seems to want to portray is that people will intentionally go to Comic Markets in order to purchase non-ero doujinshi. This is a fallacy.”

While there may be plenty of erohon available at Comike and other such conventions, there’s also enough other material there that I think it’s a bit egocentric to assume that anyone who says they’re going for purposes other than purchase of mass quantities of pornography is hiding something. While you may find Comike’s erohon offerings so mind-blowingly awesome that it seems impossible that a person could be going there for any other reason, I can assure you, there is a world of doujin beyond pornography, and it is great, too.
