Kyoshiro to Towa no Sora – Yuri-o-meter CHECK shiyo!

| Kuu and Setsuna have to be the hottest yuri couple in….well..ever!
I have to admit that ever since Strawberry Panic and Simoun, I have been half expecting another yuri centric anime to drop out of the sky, but recently the heavens have been pretty dry, even for just the anime containing a little yuri on the side. So I was quite taken by surprise when KyoSora appeared on Tokyotosho. At first I was a little suspicious – especially since the anime didn’t really gain a positive impression on teh interweb. But eventually, curiosity at this new series prevailed, and watchage took place.
On the outset it seems that it is rather a carbon copy of Kannazuki no Miko, and suddenly, I was brought to mind of the emulation of Marimite by Strawberry Panic, which ended up in, what I thought to be a far superior series.
First impressions of KyoSora were that it was drawn in a similar but tighter style than KannaMiko and the further use of pastel colours rather than bright ones I thought gave a rather gentler feel to it. Also, since the mecha seems to be less pronounced (they are not so big and seem more a part of the Angels summoning them, rather than separate (annoying) entities), I found myself liking it just that little bit more than Kannamiko. So far, the storyline makes (relative) sense, which is a plus. I don’t think I ever really understood what the hell was going on in Kannamiko. Additionally, since the main character is called Kuu, which reminds me of my favourite Pangya character, its only natural to like it just that little bit.
Kuu is your general scatter-brained high schooler who has a tomboyish best friend and who is just that little bit shy with boys. She keeps talking in her head to some prince type she met when she was little, so she is perhaps just about on the cute side of loopy. If she started to talk about herself in the third person then some Japanese otakus might get a touch of nose related blood loss.

| Kyoshiro: “Kuu…I…am your father.” Kuu: “Thats okay oto-san, let’s have hawt secks anyway”
However, several other things about the first episode left me a little disappointed. From the impression I got of the girls in the first episode, they spend most of the time swooning over pretty boys that come fluttering in like they’re some kind of private army with cool oozing so far out of their ears you wonder if there’s any room left in there for brain matter. Kyoshiro, the bishonen who gives his namesake to the title of this anime seems to be the same as the rest, but he allows himself a little perversion on the side at least.

| Ahh, Japanese High school girls uniforms – The saviour of the Velcro industry…
How can a series seemingly based on KannaMiko exist without a good strong yuri relationship running through the storyline – I thought.
The second episode, however, turns this all around. It suddenly occurred to me that there was little or no fanservice in the first episode (unless of course, you count Kyoshiro’s *ahem* manly urges). In the second episode, KyoSora showcases its main two yuri pairings and offers a little hope on the horizon that this might turn into something good. The first is the one that has been endlessly posted in picture forum threads for the past few months, mainly because Kuu says some really dopey things about “the eternal secret of girls” instead of joining in for some hawt threesome action, of course.

| Yuri-power ON FULL! Initiate docking procedure.

| Docking complete.

| …and…then Kuu says useless stuff. IT’S NOT PROHIBITED IN MY WORLD!!!
Kaon (Chikane) and Himiko (Himeko) are the classic yuri pairing most reminiscent of Kannamiko (mainly since Kaon is basically Chikane minus her hairband.) The way they are devoted to each other is rather touching, reminiscent of the love between Himeko and Chikane at the end of Kannamiko, and as such it is good eye candy, but since it seems “all played out”, it will take at least a little storyline twist to keep this yuri pairing interesting, but we’ll see.
The second “fanfiction” pairing is between Kuu and Setsuna. Although it is not really hinted at in the anime, all the art published in poster magazines such as Megami seem to be mainly of Kuu and Setsuna in various stages of undress embracing in a nosebleed-inducing fashion. It goes without saying that Kuu is the uke of this relationship. Of the two relationships in the anime, Kuu/Setsuna is the most interesting. (It also is interesting to note that she mentions that her friend Kaede collects yuri manga O_o). It is almost guaranteed that storyline wise, Kuu will end up with Kyoshiro, but it is interesting to speculate and watch for subtext (and fanart, of course)

| …dildo you found in my desk drawer – it’s far too big to go up my ass.

| …I was wrong!
All in all, it’s difficult to speculate exactly how yurilicious this series will be, especially just from the first 2 episodes, but it does offer a little eye candy and some run-of-the-mill token yuri at the outset which can’t be bad.

Ix. What happened? What happened, man? What happened to the good old days of us laughing at Strawberry Panic together? Must you really be so lame as to declare it “better” than Marimite? Must you use this as a precedent in determining your watching/liking of future shows?
Ix. It’s depressing.
Ix. Why?
…
There’s no way in hell that Kyousora will be better than Kannazuki no Miko. Furthermore don’t diss on the mecha in KnM. They were gods; how badass is that?

Ah, i personally loved KnM and always will. Always. Any anime that can make me tear up deserves that much, and the yuri factor was just right.
Kyosora was actually on my list of animes to watch but the suspiciously familiar storyline gave me my doubts. Though now I must watch the first episode and see for myself, thxyavery much.

I admit when I saw the first episode I thought it was good but KnMs first episode was much better. I decided to keep watching and found that KyoSoras 2nd episode was better than the 2nd episode of KnMs. So I kept watching and now by the fifth episode I’m hooked. As I remember KnM started out slow and got much better later into the anime. Thats why I’m giving KyoSora a chance and so far it looks like I’ve been rewarded. I mean whats not to like especially when you have Chikane and Himeko look a likes. The Kuu and Setsuna bath scenes are nice touches as well. Oh and one more thing, I laugh every time I hear Kuu’s internal monologue. Some of the things she says is really funny. So for me KyoSora is win.

…I for one am completely let down this series…to me it took a promising premise and butchered it completely and irrevocably…
…not the least of its problems is that it features the 2 least appealing main characters in nearly the last decade…the one anime I can think of that have as despicable a main cast would be…well…Blue Gender…yes…
…Kyo-bozu desperately need to spend some quality time with a sharpened pole Vlad Tepes style…and Kuu…despite what you may think Yuribou…is not “your general scatter-brained high schooler”…I still remember high school…a person with her mental faculties should be in the special needs class and riding the short bus to school…

Lolikit: When have we ever agreed over Strawberry Panic? I thought I had made it pretty clear that I thought that it was an awesome series since it had so much cheese and yurirape, that marimite couldn’t really come close…
And mecha is fail.
Hyosuke: Awesome – there are more bath scenes! That alone is incentive to watch.
Zzz: I think you make a good point – the main male protagonist is a jerk off. However, Kuu is most definitely cute.

I so wanted Setsuna/Kuu for this series. I mean, sure I love Chikane/Himeko-Kaon/Himiko, but I just wanted this so badly D8
I loved Setsuna, she was definitely the best character of the series; there were some parts where I hated Kyoshiro and some minor ones when I hated Kuu, but now I like them all.

I personally hated Kuu… they pushed the bar way too far with the kawaii meter. Setsuna was the perfect edge: cold, but totally , utterly cute when needed xD
