Lucky Star – It’s Great!

| Yep! I watched Lucky Star!
Right, let’s get started on one of the more controversial anime this season – Lucky Star…
Controversial, because of what I’ve read of it, a lot of people have been looking forward to it and were fairly disappointed by the first episode…However, Hung is obviously biased since any time spent subbing Lucky star means less time subbing the equally awesome Animal Yokocho…
Incidentally, Tsukasa in Lucky Star is also Kuu-chan in Yokocho.
Lucky Star is based on a 4-koma manga, and despite some apprehension on the source material, let me remind you of the godly Azumanga Daioh, one of the classic anime of all time. I think anime fits very well into the 4-koma sketch format.
Oh, if you hadn’t already guessed I thought the first episode was fantastic.
The OP, despite some concerns that it smacks of Suzumiya Haruhi, is awesome, both in lyrics, music and dance routine. In fact, especially the dance routine. Which is awesomely awesome.

Konata Izumi is the main character in all that a main character can be in a series like this. She is awesome in many ways – the least of which is that she is voiced by Hirano Aya. Also, she has an ahoge, knee length hair and likes anime and doujin games. What more could one want in a girl? The answer, she has :3 face and looks like a blue haired version of Shakugan no Shana. Definite moe factor ahoy.

Apart from her the other main characters seem to be the sisters Tsukasa and Kagami who are cute and soft voiced, in that order and Miyuki, the meganekko clever, clumsy one. At the moment they seem nothing much more than objects for Konata to bounce jokes off, but hopefully they might develop into cute characters in future episodes ^_^…
And of course there’s lucky channel Akira-chan whose defining feature is that her jumper is about 5 sizes too large and when people mention her paycheque she turns into Revy from Black Lagoon.
OK, the best thing about Lucky Star is probably Konata’s :3 face, followed by the spot-on random musings about what people think about but generally think are too stupid to discuss – namely food. I for one have always wondered how exactly to eat the last bite of an ice lolly and what exactly is acceptable to put mayonnaise on. Me and love liked it so much, we decided to come up with a food related eating discussion of our own!
Yuribou: Let’s start with something easy – how do you eat Jaffa Cakes, love?
Love: Obviously you have to eat all the bits separately…you bite around the edge then you lick off the chocolate on top then eat the orangey bit…
Y: Noo, you definitely have to save the orangey bit til last
L: But then your fingers will get all sticky and orangey…that’s why you have to lift it off gently with your tongue
Y: ^_^;
L: And with soft ice cream – when do you eat the flake?
Y: well I try to eat it with the ice cream, but I usually end up eating it all first.
L: It IS the best bit…
Y: And another thing, how can you eat ketchup with egg fried rice?
L: How can you not?
Y: Indeed. How do you eat a Walnut whip?
L: I don’t.
Y: Oh.
L: Walnuts are yucky.
Y: What about KitKat Chunkies? Do you eat the chocolate off first?
L: Oh yeah, definitely, and you have to eat it in layers. The middle layer is the best.
Y: And here was me thinking they were all the same.
L: Croissants.
Y: Wa?
L: You can’t butter it all at once, you have to break off 2 end ear bits and butter them separately…
Y: It’s a moon – they’re not ears..
L: Hmm..
Y: I like eating the Battenburg squares separately…then the yucky almond jam doesn’t get in the way
L: But you have to eat the different flavours together! So they complement each other!!
Y: They’re all the same flavour!
L: No they’re not – the pink and the yellow squares taste entirely different.
Y: Hmm..
L: You kno I’m right.
Y: What else can we talk about…
L: I like drinking Midori on its own upside down. Like you do to cure hiccups.
Y: That’s just weird.
L: :3
And last but not least – random yuri scene!
| …I wonder if she noticed the black triangles I stuck round her face…

Appreciated it on first viewing, liked it on second viewing, fell in love with it on third viewing. I’m glad other people enjoyed the food discussion – it’s good to know that I’m not the only one who understands the importance of balancing the elements of whatever you’re eating. Plus Kona-chan is absolutely right on the correct technique on eating a Mr. Whippy ice-cream.(Love’s theory of battenburg consumption is also spot on.) :)
Best things: undoubtedly Akira-chan at the end and Kona-chan’s rendition of the Uchuu Tetsujin Kyodain theme tune. Only a genuinely awesome singer can manage karaoke of that epic quality. Oh, and hurrah for random yuri. Having read some of the manga, I expect more of that in the future. :3

Yeah I don’t know why there was so much negative hype about it. I mean I thought it was pretty good. I especially enjoyed Kono-chans remarks like on moe, how to eat food, and especially the look on her face after Kagami asked her why she was so well versed in the adult game scenarios. Oh I also couldn’t forget her awesome karaoke debut at the end, lol. I admit it wasn’t hilarious but it was more than enough to keep me entertained and I can’t wait for the next episode. I think some people just don’t give shows enough of a chance if they aren’t blown away by the first episode. Plus I know a lot of people that said the weren’t crazy about it after watching the raw, I mean come on. I at least like to give shows a chance and to me Lucky Star is something I will definitely keep watching. Oh and one final thing the opening is EPIC!

Never heard that one before. It does seem like a good idea though. Low expectations can make anything seem good. Maybe it was part of KyoAni’s secret plan. I herd nothing but bad things about it but decided I need to watch for myself anyway. I did and I thought it was pretty good. Then I started wondering what was wrong everyone else. I guess its just the law of averages catching up to personal tastes.

*ahem* To be honest its at this point that Yuribou oficially has my ear when it comes to anime. *nod nod* I saw nothing but negative feedback on Lucky Star up until now, so good job. It’s nice to have another sensible voice in this area besides all the hype that goes around.
