midweek post – flesbians in the mass media

Well, for numerous reasons, especially boredom, here’s a rare midweek post.

If you’ve read a film magazine relatively recently, you’ve seen that a UK comedy duo has released a film, which outwardly seems to fit my interests – namely “Lesbian Vampire Killers”, in which two nerdy types visit a strange village which has an unusual curse in which the girls become lesbian vampires.

Basically pandering to both of the basic male urges to a) lesbians and b) cheap B movie horror.

And this got me thinking about the phenomenon of fake (over the top) lesbianism in general; or FLESBIANS to coin a term. This would involve girls who aren’t actually gay grinding in a pseudo-Sapphic erotic display. Think examples like pole-dancing girls in nightclubs or even those terrible softcore porn films that Channel 5 (or your country equivalent) used to show after the watershed.

Signs of Flesbianism include over-enthusiastic tongue kissing, (Note to all animators and filmmakers alike – it is not sexy or particularly realistic to tongue-tango entirely outside the mouth. In fact, it looks VERY SILLY.), general over-dramatisation and physiques on both sides that wouldn’t look out of place sunbathing in Monaco. In short, Flesbianism is the kind of off the cuff lesbianism just for show. To the men watching it’s two beautiful women getting hot and heavy together, but the show is so highly charged and downright unrealistic that the implication is “This girl is so up for it she goes for girls and boys equally”.

And if you refer back to my Fetish Month yuri post, one of the top ranking explanations for why men like lesbians is that: “They’d like to get in there for a threesome”. Although I’m sure most of you wonderful people out there reading my blog don’t fall into that category, I’m sure it’s a pretty common mindset in the general population.

So you can see the reason that I dislike this form of yuri.

Yes, pseudo-lesbianism such as this has its place. It is clear to see in it’s portrayal in real-life pornography where Flesbians have lascivious, over-the-top sex (which real lesbians probably would tell you doesn’t look like it would hit the spot) in ostensibly public places before getting “discovered” by a guy who they then proceed to have a threesome with despite the obvious “gay couple + opposite sex =/= good”.

What the mass media needs is more proper lesbian storylines and as a bonus, if they were acted well that would be nice as well. What puzzles me slightly is how few and far between they are (especially because they always create a stir in the media – generally along the lines of “LEZ LOVE ON TEH OC HAWT”, but never mind eh.) since surely in this day and age we can treat these relationships in the same way as those common or garden heterosexual ones…

Or is that just a distant dream?

Don’t mind me – I’m just another guy waxing lyrical on lesbianism. Bloody perverted men.

lol Nah. You approach “girl on girl” from a non-threatening and intellectual angle. You see through all the bullshit set up to entice dumber beings. You can’t lump yourself with the rest of them. In fact, you should be an honorary lesbian. Your porn likes and dislikes are very similar to ones I hear amongst my friends and acquaintances.

It’s funny that you brought this subject up. I can’t stand when girls kiss with their tongues outside of their mouth in porn. >.> Why do men think the main act for lesbians is scissoring? It’s seriously popular consensus among men here. It’s true that tribbing is very popular among the genuinely sapphic inclined, but in missionary position. There’s more control over movement and pressure. Plus, intimacy. I’ve been out for 10 years. I’ve yet to meet a real lesbian that’s done the “scissor”.

As far as normalizing it, I live in the U.S. Vermont and D.C. legalized gay marriage today. Iowa legalized it a few days ago. It’s very exciting. ^_^

    Media:
    - The L Word
    - South of Nowhere
    - Mistresses Season 1
    - Bad Girls

There are quite a few decent movies too.

I really dislike flesbians. Especially in porn. (Nothing against porn, by the way. Hmmm, sweet porn. *drools*) It’s just that they’re SO over the top and phony looking. Sterile even.

Just recently, on the Brit tv show “Skins,” they had an AWESOME storyline involving two teenage girls, Emily and Naomi, that was just about the truest representation of young lesbian love that I’ve even seen on the tube. (Certain movies aside.) Other than that there hasn’t been a decent lesbian hook-up in television since Willow and Tara in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. (Yes, Joss Whedon is a genius.) Even the shows mentioned in the post above this are seriously lacking in anything that held me to watch them.

There is no gay marriage allowed here (what makes especially me very mad) and lesbians really aren’t common in media here. The above mentioned L World was the only one shown in our TV, by the time of 11:30 pm because they didn’t want young people to watch it. You don’t even see Flesbians in media quite often, besides the uhm yes, channel 5 thing.

I find this presentation of lesbians annoying for the same reason that I find presentations of gay guys annoying. It has very little basis in reality, yet has massive influence on popular perceptions. And popular perceptions have a nasty habit of becoming self-perpetuating.

I also find that out-of-mouth kissing thing bizarre. It’s just blatant exhibitionism, in a bad way. Not focusing on your own pleasure, just fixated on how you look in front of others, which is unrealistic and off-putting.

I love out-of-mouth kissing. It makes me laugh so hard when one starts sucking on the other’s tough like a straw.

I must announce my displeasure with this post however. Talking about fake lesbians and topping it with NanoFate! I’m insulted – NanoFate is the truest form of yuri of any shape or form!

    Thanks for the comments all,

Happyhappy: Thank you – I shall frame it and put it with my degree certificates ^^… Thanks for the recommendations! It’s good to see that America is relaxing things a little, I’m actually not 100% sure of the status over here but I think we legalised gay civil ceremonies in 2005…

Sara: I actually missed Skins, but I heard that there was a good storyline. Yes, Joss is a genius… I hope he does another series soon – Dollhouse wasn’t fantastic and we can’t live on Dr. Horrible forever!

Joku: unfortunate – Which is your country? I wasn’t aware you lived in the UK, cause you understood the channel 5 reference…

Akakori: Sorry, there isn’t a ridiculous_french_kiss tag on danbooru!

First I have to say give Dollhouse more of a chance, the stand-alone episodes at the start were crap but I blame Fox for them being there. When the myth arc starts to heat it really improves.

But the issue of Flesbians is that is just a symptom of a greater issue: the pandering to 18-35 straight male demographic. It is due to this that in America we have wrestling on our science fiction channel and reality shows on the weather channel. Due to this pandering we are lucky to find any decent representation of an actual healthy relationship. And I think that may be why so many of us here enjoy the shows that we do. Yes it may be over-top and idealistic in some, well most, cases but at least there is an effort behind it.

And may I just say that marriage should never be a political issue. Marriage should never be a legal concept, as it is a social one. And a social concept should never interfere with any rights afforded to all citizens of a society. If one pair of citizens can receive rights any and all pairs should be afforded the same. Sorry for the preaching.

Hehe… Actually I’m from germany, the only reason why I understand the channel 5 reference is because there is some quite a similar TV here.
