More real life stuff…Opinions on tattoos and the like – possibly anime related

Hi all,
Sorry about this but I am again erring from the path of anime for some reason. It’s not that I’m not watching any shows this season – but they’re all fairly dull and without useful comment (and I’m sure the other anime blogs are keeping you occupied in that respect.)
So I thought I would get your opinions on something else entirely that;s been occupying me for a while.
And that would be on the subject of tattoo designs…
I’ve kinda wanted a tattoo for a couple of years now and have been toying with ideas for quite a while in the safe knowledge that for the general tattoo I would like, I won’t be able to afford it safely until I have gradated and am earning a paycheque at least. However, in the recent few weeks as my general opinion of the world as a whole and life in general has waxed and waned, I’ve started to think more about designs that would mean more to me and that I would be happy with.
To sum myself up, I am probably a geneticist in who medicine is an exciting and involving hobby and anime (of course) and hentai take up a large proportion of my interests. My initial ideas have centred around the encode patterns used in the anime Dennou Coil (which I’m sure you’re familiar with), which I would like done across the whole of my back, perhaps with some words and phrases of note hidden in the squiggles and geometry.
However, since I went on Google and was monkeying around the other day, I found this great Flickr set on “science tattoos” collected by that New York Columnist Carl Zimmer…
What better way to show your height of geekiness than with a tattoo that signifies your science. I especially like the hardcore geneticist (she is the one with the cell in metaphase tattooed on her bicep) who has the “Start” codon tattooed on one fist and a “Stop” codon on the other. Pure genius.
So i thought I’d better throw it open and see what the readers at large thought about the idea. To be truthful, I’ve always pretty much been leaning towards a large scale pattern of the variety that “isn’t complicated when you look at it but is intricate when you scrutinise it closely” – though nothing of the Maori variety, please. I think I would rather have one large tattoo which encompassed myself rather than lots of different ones added at different times that didn’t necessarily go together.
So what do people think? Is the Dennou Coil thing a good idea? Are there any similarly cool pattern type things that would also be awesome? Or is science geekiness the way to go?
I guess I should put a poll up or something – that T-shirt one’s been up far too long…
Oh, and incidentally, does anyone have a good clear picture of said encodes from Dennou Coil?

“So what do people think? Is the Dennou Coil thing a good idea?”
They are not distinctive enough. There are dozens of animes with designs like those.
Now, the Berserk’s brand on the neck, or Soul Reaver designs like on that one guy – those are instantly recognizable.
And the sign of the absolute geekiness would be the Naruto leaf symbol, heh.
BTW, are you a female ? I always believed that tattoos on a females is pretty much always a sign of her being a slut. My life experiences only further supported this theory, never dissuaded.

I always think that with a tattoo, you should always try to think about 6 months down the road, and then a year down the road. Would you still dig it? Remember, it’s permanent. For me, for example, I’m a huge anime fan, but I’ve yet to put anything anime-related onto my skin, because I know that after I craze out about a current anime I might lose interest after the series is done. What my friend did before he got his was make a temporary one and wear it around for 3 weeks first. He got tired of it, and changed it.
@ Karry:
Yuribou himself is a guy. Love is a girl. No disrespect intended, but your blanket statement sucks. Your life experiences may find slutty girls with tattoos, but I know plenty of girls who have them and are not. And I’m certainly not a slut.
Let’s put it this way: how do you feel about guys with tattoos?

In my opionion, big tattoos are neither neat nor nice. Sure, it might look “cool” when you first take a look and all. But in the end when you think about it, a giant tattoo covering the entire back or something similiar are rather horrible, especially when you grow older. It is just…too much. I think the best are a medium sized one on the shoulder or something nice on the underarm etc.
But as stated, this is just my opionion and not necessarily all big tattoos has to be bad. :)

hmm tattoos.. it’s odd how they’ve become so popular(?) lately in media, y’know all those tv shows on the air (God knows why)… I personally think tattoos are’nt really cool, after all they fade and look crappy and stretched out as you get older skin…. on a side note you guys remember tatu? whatever happened to them?…

Hmmm.. Although I can never get a tattoo myself (Stupid genetic mutation…) I think if you’re going to get one, make it tasteful and not too large. I suggest a caduceus wrapped with DNA chains instead of snakes. Placed on the bicep.

As many have said before me, tatoos become ugly as you grow ugly. Plus, it’s not exactly professional to have one if you are to become a doctor.

I say don’t get a tattoo. It’s not really your work, but the artist that’s doing the actual tattooing.

I’ve considered getting a tattoo many times, but I’m very concerned that any design I might get could get redefined by other people at a later date. Imagine the unfortunate Buddhist who in 1925 gets a tattoo of the holy swastika symbol…

I wouldn’t recommend a tattoo, but Sakura’s magic circle is about as yuri as you’d get.
Also, Tatu made a movie.

Timothy what would your mother say?
Personally I am not a fan of them, especially large ones. It’s entirely your own choice though =)
