Otome wa Boku ni Koishiteru – First look

Ah, the legendary Otoboku.

As this was billed as similar to Kashimashi and I! My! Me! Strawberry Eggs! I was intrigued (as I have always been great fans of random gender bending shows – they offer good yuri opportunities ^_^) so I watched the first episode.

A good start, I thought, was that the gender bending was not kept a secret from the authorities, just from the girls (which is understandable), kinda reminiscent of Fujioka Haruhi no yuuutsu. Ahem. Ouran high school host club. Then, for some reason, it decided to go all Strawberry Panic / Maria sama ga miteru.

Am I missing something? Does this happen at all Japanese girls schools? It’s like personal tutoring in the arts of yuri! I’d like it if it were true… Anyway, for some reason, Yukari looks a lot like that girl from Da Capo and Kana speaks in the third person (reminds me a little of Rena from Higurashi – do they have the same voice actress?) Kana is actually amazingly cute and a complete loliyuri (lolikit would approve).

| …make love to me tonight…

The best friend character is of the tomboy variety and is quite funny, though obviously there are limited stereotypes to choose from for best friends ^_^ As we haven’t really met the rest of the girls from the class we can only really tell that they are basically generic, right down to the “Rich Ojousama” Student council president (She could take a few lessons from Haruka Suzushiro of Mai HiME fame).

In general, this show contains no real merits after episode 1 apart from the gender bending antics, which are mildly amusing (like Mizuho refusing to go into the girl’s toilet (coward)), and the super deformed parts, which do well to break up the general plodding nature of the harem storyline. In essence, this anime seems to be merely available for doujinshi fodder and doesn’t seem to have the involving plotlines and angst of Kashimashi or the genuine relationships and downright weirdness of Strawberry eggs.

So we will have to see. I had high hopes for this series, so I will probably keep watching until the fansubs run out, just in case it does get good in the end. But at the moment, it just seems to be like Tsuyokiss. But with a crossdressing boy.

Do these guys voices never break???

I resisted watching this one, but it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. I guess the fansubs ran out, haven’t seen anything since the first episode.
