Shoujo Sect – Raw review

| No, there isn’t any loliyuri. Sorry about that.

So yeah, the Shoujo sect OVA came out a while ago, and yes, I have watched it in raw. Despite 3+ years of studying the language, I am still pretty dire when it comes to understanding, especially formal talk, so My understanding is pretty much coloured by the manga tankoubon. I thought I would give my two cents on what I thought was a pretty all round good hentai.

As everyone should know, I am a massive fan of Shoujo Sect, not least because it is one of the very few pure yuri eromanga out there, but mostly because the art style is pretty and clean and the characters are well done and believable (if all girl, all lesbian boarding high schools are to be believed…but anyway). So when I heard that Milky was going to do the animation, I waited with bated breath, since Milky is a great production house and expected great things of them.

And, by and large, I wasn’t disappointed! Actually, I really enjoyed the anime! Let’s go through each of the elements in turn, shall we?

| Shinobu sama looks surprisingly girly in the mornings…

Art

The art style was clean and pretty, pretty much mirroring a slightly less detailed version of Kurogane-sensei’s style. Lots of eyelashes, and little details like the patterning on Shinobu’s bra kept my eye’s well and truly sated throughout and I especially liked Momoko’s “ehh?” face  Judging by the picture on the back cover of volume 1, the hair colours are also accurate, though I would have preferred Shinobu’s hair to be a little less orange and more strawberry blonde as it could get a little heavy on the eyes. All in all, praise, though, for not going for all neon all the time.

| A masterfull “Ehh??” face complimented by a perfect “Eheheh” face.

The nipples, a bone of contention in many a hentai, were actually done rather well and didn’t look like some kind of skin disease which was a plus. I’m hoping that it doesn’t get picked up and decensored, however, since hentai does not have a good record for accurately representing vaginas. In fact, I haven’t seen one in an uncensored hentai that doesn’t remind me of the headcrabs from Half Life. But you never know, I can be pleasantly surprised…

| Yes, hentai fans, nipples do look vaguely like this. Write that down in your copybook.

Characters

The characters were pretty consistent – Momoko was brash and reliable, Shinobu was non-commital and cool, Maaya was a closet submissive and the two lesbian sisters were as cute as buttons. I guess my only thing to pick at was that Kirin (Shinobu’s faithful womanservant) was a little bit too audacious. In the manga I’d kind of picked her for the “cool quiet ethnic” stereotype not unlike Tatsumiya Mana from Mahou Sensei Negima, though she was totally committed to Shinobu. however, in the OVA, she was rather disrespectful to Shinobu, ignoring her wishes and pouncing on her in the morning which I thought was rather out of character…

| Kirin! Stop molesting Shinobu-sama!

Oh I forgot to mention, the ghost lovers storyline is the other way around in the anime…I’m not sure what that solves. Maybe they though animating Chikae’s hair would be too difficult?

| Difficult to animate hair? Poor Chikae.

I think I really fell for Momoko in the animation – She really does come off as “The only sane one in this all gay universe who doesn’t want to have sex at a moment’s notice” and the anime really conveys that with style –even though in the manga she’s screwing the hawt teacher. She’s pretty much the heroine of the piece. I didn’t really get a handle on Shinobu’s character in the first episode, but then again, she doesn’t feature that much in the first book until the latter chapters. I was really looking forward to her characterisation, since I love her “sadistic and woman-eater yet kind and soft heartedness”. It really makes a difference from all these woman-eaters who are just woman-eaters and nothing else (*cough* Shizuma *cough*)

| That is the look of “I wanna have hawt lesbian secks with you here on the floor. Now”

Music

Really weird. The music switches from general background fare to random classical symphonic exerpts sometimes at what I thought were inappropriate moments (i.e., at the start of an intimate scene ^^;;), however, since I was watching it with Love, she thought they were rather fitting, so I guess it depends on your taste…

Secks

| One question – Who the fuck are you two??

Well, the story about the secks is that there isn’t actually that much. But the secks that there is is hawt. If brief. It’s well animated with very little reused animation which I absolutely detest. Especially in the scene with Chizuru and Shigure (the incestual sisters) you can really feel the emotion between the two characters – even though I can’t understand what they’re actually saying -_-;;

| Ahh, more familiar territory – lesbian incest.

The great thing about Sect is that I really didn’t need the secks scenes to keep me interested, since I really appreciated the storyline (I guess reading the manga helps) and it was drawn so prettily that the sex scenes seemed just a natural addition to the story and not just tacked on. Weird that.

Conclusion

So I like Shoujo Sect. It helps that it is a new animation, since I really don’t like the old hentais because of the antiquated character designs. It also helps that there are no men in it, since the worst thing about hentai are “weak male protagonists obviously modeled on the director who couldn’t get any as a teenager” and badly drawn male genitalia. Really looking forward to this getting subbed. Come on Dynasty!

That’s what I noticed too; that Momoko is the only character that is not sex crazy for this OVA. But it seems like she’ll be sexually active for the next OVA. Omg with that teacher. -_-”

Regarding that 2 characters who were at the stairs making out, I recognized one but not the other. The one with the purple short haired is Oogami-senpai, the one that sexually assaulted Shinobu but got hit by Momoko’s fire extinguisher attcker in volume 2 of the manga. I think its a nice try; to introduce Oogami into the picture but I doubt anyone will remember her when she appears again. Who would remember 2 nobodies who were making out at the stairs. lol XD

I hate net-cafes. I haven’t had Internet for the last 10 days and there is a guy next to me playing WOW and eying what I browse.
On with the OVA now. My only objection besides some alterations from the manga is they they all look like early junior high school students. Even Momoko and Shinobu look like damn 14year-olds. And the teacher at most 17. Other than that I liked it despite the obvious language problem. After having spend about a month of my life watching anime I get the gist of the story without having ever taken Japanese classes. Dynasty please we beg! We want subs hard-burned on a avi.

I was actually surprised at Shinobu’s voice, I thought it would be a bit huskier.. But besides from that, it’s a bit just like the manga. Hopefully it’ll be more focused on Shinobu’s and Momoko’s relationship, rather then those one-shot couples that we will never hear from again.

Oh and the OVA has been subbed by Killer-Maid. And, where did you guys read the manga raw?

in some ways it was just like strawberry panic.. just with less limits and whatever in the other it was like “eh… yeah whatever” just-watch-dont-think thingy

Upon magical tubes called the Internet. You’re not gonna find real copies of the manga in Manchester or anywhere in the UK. Hell, I’ve been a month in Japan and I still can’t find them! (mainly cos I’m embarassed to stray too far too long in the hentai sections…)

That aside, thanks for the review, Yuribou! If I had my own nets here I’d've gotten the raw too but alas I must wait to see it. So I really appreciate the pictures. It looks Really good, dammit, though IMO the hawt teacher looks pretty freaky, in that screenie at least.

So what’s the deal with swapping the ghost story characters around? I imagine the animation team got halfway through when they realised “Oh shit, we got them mixed up!”

The only thing I liked about this anime is the character designs. Personally wasn’t too impressed. While the secks scenes were a little too subtle and short for a hentai IMO, watching really cute girls go at it was fun.

From a Yuri aspect, it was just something to watch, but about as deep as a wet tissue paper.

If you’re after a real hentai, this ain’t it. Kinda like an XXX movie trying to be a soft porn show. At least it has some story to it.
