Spring is old fetish season #9 – Futanari – Get your penis away from my yuri!
Posted on | January 19, 2009 | 11 Comments |

The end is in sight now – thank you all for sticking with fetish month this time around…I know it didn’t get the readership that it afforded the first time around but I’d like to thank all the readers who contributed comments for their views and opinions!
The plan is for me to re-cover three of my previously covered fetishes from previous fetish months with some new insights and new angles on things, then finish off with Yuri (which somehow I’ve not managed to cover in the last 25 or so fetish month posts that I’ve made O_o). So here we go…
Top of the list for fetishes to be recovered was futanari, which makes me happy as it is one of my favourite interests (see my sister site, Yuribou-scans for confirmation of this fact). First of all, let’s go through the conclusions I made last time way back in the very first fetish month so that I don’t go through the same tired arguments again and again.
- First of all, we can view futanari as either a fetish in its own right, or merely an “add on” to any other fetish variety (increasing the H-coefficient of a scene)
- Second, it allows visible climax which provides an end point for the scene and palpably increases obvious character arousal.
- It allows penetrative sex without the threatening male protagonist character
- It can be viewed as one step up from strap-on sex in the anime fantasy world where anything is possible.
- There is some difficulty in dissociating futanari type material from real-life shemale pornography which may repel certain viewers. However, futanari has the advantage that the female characters often have never been male and therefore are completely divorced from the male form save for the phallus.
In conclusion, last time, I went through the basics of the futanari genre and why it is palatable to some people and unpalatable to others. This time, I would like to discuss the common futanari storylines and themes and how they relate to its sister fetish, Yuri.

There is a definite divide between the Yuri camps and the Futanari camps. In fact, one might liken it to a Venn diagram where there is only one circle (denoting the Futanari and Yuri fans), with the area outside the circle representing the angry mob of Yuri purists waiting to lynch the Futanari fans if any of them ever try to make a break for it. In short, there is a group of yuri fans that are staunchly against the use of Penis in their Yuri – and rightly so, perhaps. If Yuri represents love between two women, then surely a situation where one possesses a male part completely goes against the core principles. However, there are the others (including myself), who see futanari as almost an “extension” of the yuri idea.
Let me put it to you that if a yuri mangaka is prepared to use dildos and strap on type equipment in a quintessentially “yuri” scene, then what line is crossed in the fantasy world where one of the girls happens to grow a real version of that plastic sex toy? Yes, perhaps the penis as a male part undermines the pure female-only essence of the scene, but what are dildos and strap-ons if not copies of that very organ? If that same mangaka is against the use of even dildos in their work, then fair enough – there is no hypocrisy.
The very core of the matter is – if we do not focus on the phallus involved, futanari (or at least futanari/female or futanari/futanari type material) is at its roots about love or sex (or indeed rape, domination, incest) between two women. The only thing that provokes the protest about what genre it falls under is the presence of the penis. I would like to propose a different way of looking at this argument – by analysing and comparing the different storylines that arise in futanari, yuri and other genres (there aren’t many – mangaka have a remarkably narrow imagination), we can show whether futanari mainly mirrors the regular male on female doujinshi or takes a more female/female slant on things.
Common futanari storylines
- Futanari girl who “has to masturbate” in school/changing rooms/work is discovered by a futanari or female colleague who then proceeds to have sex with them
- Girl seduces other shy and retiring girl who happens to be a futanari (this being why she is shy). She then proceeds to have sex with them.
- Two girls who love each other very much make the plunge only to find out that one/both of them are more “well endowed” than they expected. They then proceed to have sex.
- Futanari girl entrusts her secret to someone (female, futanari) only to have them use it to abuse them sexually and proceed to have sex in a variety of interesting ways
- Well-endowed futanari girl rapes all and sundry in a variety of interesting ways
Common yuri storylines
- Two best friends who have been together for ages are struck by the pain of angst when one decides that they have feelings for the other. After two volumes of toing and froing, they finally have sex and it is good
- One girl spends all her time trying to get into another girl’s panties, but that girl isn’t interested. Over the course of two volumes, she warms to the idea and they finally have sex and it’s good.
- One girl has always watched another girl from afar. After a chance encounter, she is able to get close to that girl and slowly build a relationship over the course oftwo volumes. Finally, when they have sex, it is good.
- Two girls have feelings for each other, but each is convinced that the other is not interested. After two volumes of hilarious mishaps and nearly-theres, they finally have sex and it’s awesome.
- At an all-girl’s school, admiration draws a younger girl to an older sempai. Over the course of many volumes, their relationship reains chaste and pure and one may refer to the otehr as “oneesama”. They never have sex, graduate and marry men. They then have sex with their husbands, find it is bad and end up back in their sempai’s arms.
- An older/more dominant lesbian seduces and has her way with one of the more submissive characters (this is the storyline for most ero-yuri doujinshi)

So what can we conclude from these hastily picked storylines? First of all, there is a difference between yuri material and ero-yuri material. First of all, there are three categories of yuri – Non-ero, “lemon” (or ero) and hentai. In the first category is something such as the Maria sama ga miteru manga in which there is a strong yuri storyline, but no actual sex or nudity (“realisation”). In Lemon or Ero type yuri, the same storylines exist, but they culminate in a sex scene – i.e. there is a focus on story with an aside of erotic realisation – e.g. Shoujo sect. In the Hentai category is the true doujinshi where the focus is on the ero-scenes and there is little or no story – e.g. a lot of Yuri hime – Wildrose.
Futanari, on the other hand, is a genre of purely hentai connotations – for the most part, there is only one category – Hentai (though there are one or two non-ero manga). Therefore, comparing the hentai yuri storylines with the futanari storylines, we find that there is some similarity (especially in the “Older sempai seducing younger shy girl” type themes). However, since the great proportion of yuri material is non-ero, it is difficult to compare with the purely pornographic themes of futanari.
One way of resolving this difference would be to consider futanari one of the side branches of the hentai part of the yuri genre. In other words, when lesbians have sex in manga, futanari might arise. The other way of thinking about it is that futanari storylines have some aspects in common with regular rape type doujinshi – especially themes such as “Older person abuses position of power to rape submissive” and “Dominant type goes on rape rampage” and so it is a way of filling that hole for those people who love female/female doujinshi, but miss the regular sexual hijinks.
In short, what we have discovered is that futanari storylines share some points in common with some of the more saucy yuri storylines, but also a lot in common with traditional rape storylines (which is to be expected, as it is basically a hentai-only fetish). Therefore, I like to classify it as a branch of the yuri-hentai genre, occupying the space for punters who are looking for something more perverted than your traditional yurirape, but not as boring as your general male-on-female non-consensual.
Doubtless there will be contenders to my conclusion, but that’s where I stand at the moment on this topic, and I’d love for people to give their opinions, be they short or essay length. Next week, we tackle the old favourite, Lolicon. See you then!

Finally we get to my favorite fetish. On a personal note I have give thanks to the first piece you did on futanari, it felt so wonderful to know that others understood it’s greatness.
Anyway while I do agree that futanari takes a lot from yuri, I also feel that is the fetish that brings so many other branches together too. There is the obvious line to cross dressing and pegging (male/female + strap-on), which connects to the yaoi branch. Then with the fact there are both sets of sex organs we get all the combinations possible, from anal to tribadism. And moving away from the actual sex acts we get all the various personality types to match. So while futarnari owes a lot to yuri it is not limited by it. Rather futanari is the ultimate convergence of all hentai.

Har har – I perhaps wouldn’t go as far as that! However, I kinda like your yaoi connection (I don’t have a lot of futanari on male stuff, so I forgot about that part) – also, it is a little less common than futanari on female.
It’s my favourite fetish as well, so I’m biased – I always try to balance my views you see

as before, random thoughts.
i have a fairly low tolerance for futa, but can get into it if it’s presented as specifically extended from yuri–futa-on-girl action, with the futa clearly being “girl with dick”, not “cross-dressing guy with tits”. futa-on-futa could potentially be acceptable, i suppose, though i’ve never run across any that did it for me. futa-on-guy is right out.
the first futa (or pseudo-futa, depending on how you look at it) scene i ever saw (and liked) was in the third issue (i think) of _Alice in XXXland_, where alice takes the “fuck you” pill, grows a dick, and bangs the door girl. good shit. the first all-futa manga i ever read was _total biological shemale_ or sg like that, which is the adventures of a couple door-to-door salesgirls for a genetic-engineering-based half-sex-change company. for an example of the type of futa (or pseudo-futa) i *don’t* like, there’s most of _super taboo extreme_. even making it incest couldn’t rescue it for me, which is saying something.
as to *why* i like the parts i do, i can’t say with any real certainty. i guess our host’s basic premise works as well as anything else–i dig yuri, including yuri-with-toys, and yuri-with-real-cock isn’t all the different.
btw, how the hell do you classify ranma doujin?

Only three… thats too less, someone must have cheated on bondage. But finish off with yuri – yay
So, the first one is I actually dislike the whole futanari fetish because I prefer the pure yuri sex. The problem is that its in fact an interruption into the purity of a girlxgirl relation (purity … the hell) and somehow misses the yuri genre with it.
The next part should be the already mentioned fact that its actually fictional material while I prefer more realistic one. (All girls schools~ damn) In my opinion a real penis is just making the girl more a male then a girl. The penis/vagina for me is the part of a male/female person that actually gives him the sex. Where the breasts are on the 2nd place for identifiying a female, what isn’t enough to make me see a girl in a futanari girl.

P-Total Bio-Chemical Laboratory by RaTe is a wonderful book, if you liked that check out Sister Slave also by RaTe. I find his art to be a bit cartoony but it lends itself to great expressions and soft figures.
And now I may just be out there but for me a penis alone does not a man make. A major factor for me is the body type and shape, I find the presence of curves goes a long way to establishing whether the character is meant to be seen as a man or woman. But that is just me.
Also Ranma is magical gender-bending, which runs parallel to futanari.

Umm… Yuribou, I don’t know if you’ve changed anything on your website over the last few months (I’ve practically been reading since day one XD) but recently all of your posts / comments text has been “squished” together O_o
It’s as if the text is too big for the lines that they are sat on…
It makes for an interesting read though, plently of concentration to decypher half a letter XD (I’ve tried different browsers, changing the text size etc… To no avail >_

re ranma, i was thinking in particular of a very nice domestic doujin (awesome production values btw–graphic novel binding and full color!) i picked up at otacon ages ago, featuring ranma, the girls, and several buckets of water.

Reika Kitami!!!! all i have to say on futas.

Hendayo: I guess yours is the more traditional male view of futanari – as long as it’s divorced from males completely, its OK. I think P-total biochem is a favourite for many people ^^
Joku: Sorry I’m not writing more, but I really must get on with updating my wordpress or sites gonna go down again…I think you supported my point that it all depends on whether you focus on the phallus as being the defining feature or not.
Jaden: I think your opinion suits mine best. Detachable penis philosophy, I call it. Ranma is indeed gender transformation, not futanari.
Ranmasyaoran – I’ve not changed anything that I can see – it looks the same to me… Maybe it’ll improve once I upgrade to wordpress 2.7
Hendayo (again) – Not read any ranma doujins recently, but then again I don’t have a lot of domestic material…
hirohisa – I think I prefer the more passive characters, like Takahashi (Alignment You You)

I was wondering you do know that miss black (kill time communications) has done futa work like in feureg, and the manga parabellum has a futa close to th end of v1 maybe more in v2 but its more in the berserk format but with more sex than violence of berserk.
The manga a flower in the darkness (mujin comics) has a spirit that is futanari according to the description @ jlist for it ^.^

I’m just chiming in (very late, I know, had many things to do :/), and saying that I believe that a central part of Futanari’s appeal is the gender-bending aspect, the mystery involved for the characters and related things. The yuri relation, making it softer and “more feminine”, is definitely important, but I think futanari can be a lot more than Yuri using live dildos.
At least, in futa material which focuses on that aspect of things. I would have to agree in that most of the time futa plots tend to be pretty much non-existent. This is a shame, because some of the best mangas on all sides of the spectrum involve dickgirls. (Bible Black being a great story driven but more extreme anime, and Boku No Futatsu No Tsubasa being a lot softer). If you go into some roleplays or stories on futa sites, you can find some absolutely beautiful stuff.
Anyway, thanks for this blog Yuribou. I do like the quality of analysis here, and the essays in the comments ;)
