Breast Sizes
Breast size, as most people would imagine, is very important in a fanservice animation. As Konata says in Lucky Star, flat cheasts also have appeal and there are fans for every level of breast size. However, size of breast can define a character and imbue certain character traits. For example, an Ojou with large breasts will tend to either be mothering or gloating whereas tsunderes will tend to have much more modest bust size. More generously endowed girls are also often the object of the flat-chested girls’ jealousy although without a “gloating” trait, they are generally clueless as to why this should be.
The most important aspect of breast size is that, like most things in anime, it is exaggerated with respect to real life cup sizes. Since animations are set in Japan, the average cup size is smaller than most other countries (due to the oriental trait – though reports say that this trend is reversing!). The sizes of chest that you commonly see in anime are therefore exaggerations of actual cup sizes. For example, a C cup in anime would look much larger than a real life C-cup. In this section I go through the different categories that you might like to use and character types that they generally occur with. I have also included conversions. The first, “Real life to anime” is the cup size that is usually quoted as being the character’s. “Anime to real life” gives the approximate range of cup sizes that the character’s chest would correspond to in real life, purely on body to breast proportion.
For those that may be less experienced in these matters (such as myself), I would like to have a short expose on bra sizes. Bra sizes are notoriously different between countries and even manufacturers. The breast size itself is expressed as a letter (cup size), the accompanying number (e.g. 32C) having little bearing on the size of the breast (actually the measurement under the breast). Cup sizes range from AA to Z (provisionally), with single letters referring to 1 inch differences and double letters half inch differences. The largest acheived cup size on human record is XXX (equivalent to Y). The US system starts from AA and contains DD and DDD/E, whereas the UK just use DD.
The result of this is that cup sizes are equivalent up to D before the EU and Japan go one letter in front. In other words, a 30A US/UK = 65A EU/JAP but a 30F US/UK = 65G EU/JAP. Confused? I still am…Prepare yourself!
Loli/Board-flat

The domain of true lolis, loli chests are only really applicable to girls who are young enough that their breasts have not developed yet or that are so flat chested that they do not really need to wear a bra. Typical for characters with a loli type personality, and uncommon elsewhere, loli chests are appealing for lolipedofins but otherwise are purely there to enhance the loli personality moe effect. Most effective in sukumizu or school swimsuits
Small/Hinyuu

The chest size advocated by Konata Izumi (of Lucky Star fame), small breasted girls have appeal too! Often referred to as “flat-chested”, it is popular to use this feature to give a character a loli appearance, even though their personality may clash with this. Works best with smaller girls, though there are examples of cuteness enhancement when taller girls have breast size-complexes (Minami Iwasaki – Lucky Star). The most common breast size for Genki/Baka girls, strong willed and quiet girls of any type (e.g. Yuki Nagato, Nodoka Miyazaki).
Average/Funyuu

As I stated before, the average cup size for anime is probably slightly above the actual average cup size for the Japanese population. Obviously, this should be the case, since the trend of exaggerated features in the art style lends itself to the exaggeration of the feminine traits as well! Also, since it increases the sex-appeal of the characters it would be a wise move in a genre rife with fanservice. Average busts are usually seen on most normal type characters, reserved type Ojou girls and tsunderekkos (though they can also be more flat chested). Girls are imbued with no extra sex appeal, though fanservice devices such as Unnecessary Cleavage Enhancement work a lot better than on hinyuu girls. Work well in bikinis and meido-fuku.
Large/Kyonyuu

- Anime to real life conversion – F to K US/UK, G to L EU/Jap
Kyonyuu refers to breasts that are on the upper end of the natural scale (i.e. acheivable without artificial enhancement). Kyonyuu characters are inevitably associated with sex-appeal and are usually portrayed as having more mature personalities such as an “Ara-ara” type Ojou or an older Vamp type, with the obvious logic that older women with sex appeal must have huge mammaries. They are often used to smother protagonists in their cleavage or to produce comic asphyxiation. Other uses are to taunt the main female lead in the fact that her offerings are titchy small in comparison and therefore drive comically jealous rage (c.f. Mahoromatic). On the other hand, though Kyonyuu girls seemingly embody sex-appeal, it is very rare that they win the protagonist’s heart in the end – it is usually the funyuu girls who have the best chances.
Very large/Bakunyuu

- Anime to real life conversion – L to S US/UK, M to T EU/Jap
Bakunyuu (explosive breasts) are chests that are impossible (well, improbable) to attain naturally and would normally be acheived via augmentation surgery. The same rules apply to Bakunyuu as to Kyonyuu – usually they are used to give extra sex appeal to a girl normally of Ojou or Vamp type. There are exceptions to the rule, of course – take Nina from Tonagura, for example, who would probably fall into the Kyonyuu category at least. Bakunyuu breasts are more commonly used in hentai where they allow such fetishes as bonyuu (lactation) and paizuri. It tends to be that at the larger end of the scale of size, the exaggeration factor increases exponentially. (i.e. the difference between anime and real life C cup is much much smaller than the difference between G-cups) This is probably due to artist inexperience and the fact that they are mostly male and clueless about this kind of thing (though I would say that at the higher end of the scale, proportions are much more difficult to imagine). Bakunyuu sized breasts are often at the latter end of the alphabet though artists may quote a more modest cup size.
Impossibly large/Chunyuu

- Anime to real life conversion – T upwards US/UK, U upwards EU/Jap
Chunyuu refers to breasts that are larger than is usually possible with a single augmentation operation – therefore either “impossibly large” or “stupidly large” and are the sole domain of hentai only. In fact, they have their own fetish – BE (Breast expansion) referring to smaller breasts that somehow expand to unrealistic proportions. In real life they are equivalent to the few dotty women that have had several operations to bring them down to the end of the alphabet (e.g. Chelsea Charms – current holder of the World record), but obviously in hentai they can become much larger since they are not constrained by silly rules such as anatomy, gravity and/or back pain. It goes without saying, of course, that all breasts in anime are natural, yet pert and squashy. Best viewed in impossibly supportive corsets or improbably small bikinis (probably made from steel cable)

Sorry, I got most of them from danbooru or 4chan, so dont have the sources, as I said earlier. A is Initial-G (http://initial-g.jp) and N is official art from a poster in Megami Magazine on Tonagura!.
