The Yuribou Guide to Fanservice for animators #6 – Important scenes Part 1

Welcome back to the Yuribou Guide to fanservice for animators.

| Wah! Wardrobe malfunction!

I hope that by now you’ve got your cast fleshed out and rearing to go but your storyboard editor is yelling at you that besides the main storyline there really isn’t anything that shows off your unique character’s “credentials”. I think you know what he means.

Fanservice has a long history of utilising stereotypical scenes in order to impart service to the watchers. It wouldn’t be, strictly speaking, realistic, for example, if the heroine flashed her panties at the protagonist in the corridor without any pretext would it?

Fanservice scenes are all about providing an opportunity for characters with a lot of potential to be scantily clad or show off their unmentionables while also keeping it within context. A lot of fanservice scenes are more traditional rather than actually realistic, with fanservice anime using the same scenes year after year to varying effectiveness. Good examples of this include the “ecchi na kaze” and “accidental perverted fall”.

As with character types, it is very easy to fall into thinking that just by including the expected fanservice scenes in an anime you can cover all bases. This is however, not true. Especially with scenes that have been used time and again, these will barely even register with most seasoned fanservice users if used on their own. However, with proper context, even tired old devices take on a shiny new lease of life.

For example, with even the simplest “ecchi na kaze (perverted wind)” scene, the subject must be a character that the audience wants to see the panties of, the recipients must be characters percieved worthy of seeing aforementioned panties and most importantly, they must be sexy panties. So as you can see, (apart from the latter point), some story context is required as buildup in order to make a fanservice scene successful.

In this section I will be going through typical fanservice scenes, example scripts for each (acted out by our wonderful Yurivision couples) and important points to remember for each scene:

  • 1. Ecchi na Kaze (Perverted Wind – EnK)

    • Description: “Ecchi na Kaze” is one of the oldest and most typical fanservice shots. In this simple device, girls walking along unsuspectingly (usually on the way to school) are suddenly oppressed by a strong gust of wind which causes skirt lifting and panty expose.
    • Example: Probably the most famous one is performed by Asuka Langley Sohryu on NGE (Episode 8 I believe)
    • For extra service: Girl has no panties ^_^ (e.g. Natsuki – Mai HiME)
    • Important points to remember: Girl must be a character watchers want to see the panties of, recipient must be worthy of seeing said panties. Panties must be nice/non-existant.
    • Typical Scene (acted out by Shizuru and Natsuki)
    • EXT School path, DAY. NATSUKI is walking down the path slowly but noticably keeping her legs together. Cherry blossoms are falling. SHIZURU catches up with her.
      SHIZURU: Aha, Natsuki, Gokigenyou
      NATSUKI: Shizuru, now’s not the best time…
      Gust of wind blows NATSUKI’s skirt up. She is not wearing panties. NATSUKI resembles a certain root vegetable.
      N: Argh! Ecchi na kaze!
      SHIZURU nosebleeds out of shot.
  • 2. Reverse Breast grab (RBG)

    • Description: The reverse breast grab is a manoeuvre that can only be used by girls on other girls (otherwise it will usually be received with ill favour). It invloves an unsuspecting (usually submissive, quiet girl with disproportionately sized breasts) girl being suddenly assaulted from behind by another (usually tomboy or eccentric genki girl). The manoeuvre is classically performed from behind but can also be performed from the front (straight breast grab).
    • Example: Tina Foster and Taeko Minazuki from Ai Yori Aoshi
    • For extra service: The recipient enjoys it rather too much. Manoeuvre performed in swimsuits or underwear. Perpetrator’s hands explore rather more than is publically acceptable ^_^
    • Important points to remember: The recipient’s breasts must be disproportionately sized or this is less effective. Adding yuri subtext between the two characters beforehand is always a plus.
    • Typical scene (perfomed by the beautiful Shizuma and Nagisa)
    • INT school hall, DAY. SHIZUMA is talking to MIYUKI about something or other. NAGISA is approaching from behind sneakily.
      SHIZUMA: …And then I shoved it in!
      MIYUKI: Yes, yes, Shizuma, you told me that story about stuffing the Christmas turkey last week.
      NAGISA glomps SHIZUMA from behind. There is fondling.
      NAGISA: On-ee-sa-ma~~~
      There is hand wanderage. SHIZUMA makes some unintelligible noises then glomps NAGISA. Hijinks ensue.
      M: Well..I’ll…just leave then.
  • 3. Acceidental perverted fall (APF)

    • Description: The first of the fictional scenes. WARNING: This never happens in real life. The girls you see are professionals working under controlled conditions, so do not under any circumstances try this at home, as it may result in grievous injury. (Believe me, we have tested it) The APF is another of the classic scenes in which a protagonist runs into/is run into by a girl, the result of which is that a body part of one ends up in contact with a squishy bit of the other. I think you get the picture.
    • Example: A favoured device of Ken Akamatsu-sensei, it features heavily in both Negima! and Love Hina.
    • For Extra service: Head in crotch is an oft used variation on the theme. Combine with skirt flip and panty shot for full effectiveness.
    • Important points to remember: After an APF, the characters are now irreversibly bound together storyline-wise, for the rest of the series. If nothing happens between these two characters, then the APF serves no purpose and has gone to waste.
    • Typical Scene (performed by the lovely Sakura and Tomoyo)
    • EXT City streets NIGHT. SAKURA with wand out is running after an unidentified Clow card with Kero in tow quite a way behind. Unbeknownst to her, her best friend TOMOYO is just rounding the corner from her usual late night shopping trip to the red light district.
      SAKURA: Ahh! The Clow card’s getting away! Come back!
      SAKURA rounds corner and collides with TOMOYO coming the other way. When the inexplicable dust cloud clears, SAKURA has somehow ended up where TOMOYO’s panties should be. Various MARITAL AIDS are liberally scattered around like an exploded Ann Summer’s pinata.
       SAKURA: (muffled) Tomoyo-chan, why aren’t you wearing panties?
      TOMOYO: Oh, Sakura-chan, you’re so bold! Stop for a second, I just have to get out my camcorder!
      Kero rounds the corner and nosebleeds out of shot. Hijinks Ensue.

    I’m sorry to be slow on catching up with your posts, but I’ll read them all that’s for sure. Such enjoyment in reading is rare. Especially those example scenarios are hilarious. Have you ever considered being a movie director? XD

    o yea i forgot sumthing important!! whats this website about? lol i was just searching sumthing about natsuki and shizuma than i saw this so i kinda want to kno what this website about cuz it looks interesting!
