Yuribou update post! What’s going on in the world of girl-girl loving?

Posted on | November 13, 2007 | 18 Comments |

For lack of anything better to write, I thought I would reflect on the anime love and I have been watching in the past few months to see whether there were any new series that I could recommend to you anime and manga lovers out there.

As usual, team Yuribou is way behind in terms of actual new stuff. In fact, since Chachamaru decided to go in for insurmountable repairs, all this seasons new stuff has been locked up in my desktop hard drives just waiting to be accessed when I can finally start building Chachamaru II (graphics card on preorder -_-). At the moment, love is knitting me a scarf – a decent replacement pastime for lack of anime ^_^

The Hentai Dictionary is coming along. Thank you to the person who keeps emailing me with suggestions for inserting terms – as soon as I have sorted out the letter headers I will get around to appraising the entries. Cheers for the help in sorting out the grammar and spelling.

From this season:

Kimikiss ~pure Rouge~

First of the veritable cornucopia of H-game based anime this season, Kimikiss slots in with a rather stereotypical storyline of “hawt female osananajimi moves in with unwitting male teenager – hijinks result”. However, unlike what you would expect from such a storyline, she proceeds not to fall in love with said teenager who is already obsessing over suicide love-triangle hungry bookstore girl but instead starts to stalk cool silent music guy. In the meantime, best friend of protagonist continues to obsess over strange and equally hawt genius girl. All in all, very watchable. If only there was some yuri, the formula would be complete…

Kannonad (Clannad)

Kannonad, what love and I have dubbed the rather pretty Clannad is second in our H-game filled season. Clannad is a great story by the people who made Kanon featuring characters who are all, by definition, freaks with a relatively normal male protagonist who somehow manages to muscle into all these girls’ private lives without seeming like some shady stranger who was trying to get into their frilly panties. The thing to note is that the freakishness is different to the freaky characters in Kanon, and therefore it is a different anime. And with a.f.k. subbing it, what isn’t there to like about Kanon. I mean, Clannad. Ahem.

Minami-ke

Otherwise known as “the triangle mouth anime” It joins the growing series of anime about groups of sisters who live together for various reasons of parents dying/running away/working overseas (Magikano, Binbou Shimai Monogatari, Tonagura). And despite all the toing and froing about it, the humour is rather good. And there’s yuri. Yuri-incest to boot! The admiration/yurilovelove that Haruka and Chiaki share would be rather touching if it weren’t for Kana’s slapstick randomness bringing a touch of comedy to the situation. Possibly the only funny anime this season.

Genshiken 2

What can we say – it’s Genshiken. The more Ogiue goodness the better really. Every time she blushes at the fact that she actually is aching to draw and cosplay her heart out while diddling herself silly to stacks of yaoi doujins makes my heart skip a beat. Also Saki is a lot more lenient this season. And Kohsaka crossdressing – awesome. Basically, it’s more of the same, just with a much nicer colour palette.

Blue Drop

Boring yuri. Read the manga – it’s awesome and so much better. Art is fantastic too. Believe me – if even me (and I think, Erica of Okazu) think this anime is boring, it probably lacks merit.

Sketchbook ~Full Colours~

Not as good as Hidamari Sketch

Goshuushousama Ninomiya-kun

From just having watched the first episode, it’s basically like someone got Girl’s Bravo and mixed it up in a blender (girl with random magic and androphobia needs to be cured by boy she is randomly not allergic to). Girl’s Bravo is by far the superior anime – if mainly because of yuri mudbaths and copius nudity. Love likes it, though.
Anime I am collecting but haven’t got round to watching yet:

Shakugan no Shana II – Continuing the boredom from the end of the first season?
Kodomo no Jikan – Apparently censored to hell. The manga is bound to be superior.
Sky Girls - Mecha and lolis. abq would be proud.
Higurashi no naku koro ni kai – not quite in the mood for scaryscaryscary
Moetan – Eventually I will save up enough moe-immunity to watch this sickly sweet offering

Previous seasons:

Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha StrikerS - Bring on the next season when all the extras have suffered horrific random deaths.
CLAYMORE – I gave up on this, but love says it is well good.
Doujin Work – I still think it’s awesome.
Oh yes, and last night, love and I finally got round to watching Byousoku 5cm

In my internet opinion, I think 5cm/s is probably the strongest of the Shinkai Makoto offerings. (Obviously not including the masterful She and her Cat). Beyond the Clouds was ok but became a little boring in the middle and I definitely lost the plot a little, even though it was indeed very pretty. Voices was less pretty but had a much more succinct storyline but suffered a little in the eyes of the amateur anime viewer since there was a significant mecha element to it. Byousoku 5cm has the wonderfully sad storyline of Voices but with the pretty colour palette and arty shots of Beyond the clouds. In short a winner.

Can’t wait for it to come out on DVD – Something I might actually buy ^_^

Manga-wise, I’m a little skint at the moment, as computer part buying has left a rather sizable hole in the wallet. However, I am looking forward to the release of the load of yuri manga from the Strawberry range by Seven Seas in December – Including the long awaited first installment of Strawberry Panic, Voiceful and many more.

In terms of released manga, I’m still waiting for the third volume of Kashimashi ~Girl meets girl~ to turn up on Amazon and I would really like the money to catch up a little more on the High School Girls manga.

Over and out from Yuribou and love – Still mourning the abject lack of yuri goodness in the current few seasons -_-

You’re waiting for Kashimashi too? I ordered it a month ago in a batch. The other manga came, but I’m still waiting for hat :’(
I’m looking forward to Strawberry Panic too, but I’m not the biggest fan of the art style – I need to see more than the Seven Seas preview to make my decision.
Doujin Work IS awesome. The manga too. So many people are missing out.
Moetan is wrong, but in a good way. Good wrong.
Sky Girls is like Nanoha SS: 13 eps of training; then 13 eps of slow build-up. Still sticking with it, though.
KnJ is so brutally censored is barely worth watching. It’s not that I want to see what’s underneath, but if they wanna avoid ecchi THAT much then why put scenes like that in at all. From reading the manga, the storyline is great without the loli-ecchi IMO.
Shana II is a snoozefest. Don’t read the subs, just look at the great art/animation.
I like Blue Drop, it’s casually intriguing. Not the best though.
Minami-ke is the second funniest this season, IMO, cos Clannad takes that crown for me. Some scenes are frankly hilarious and totally unexpected from the genre – that’s the KyoAni effect.
    I’m done.

“And with a.f.k. subbing it, what isn’t there to like”

Except the fact that a.f.k. suck. Their Haruhi release were ok, but that was only since there were so few “otaku words”. Translating “moe” to “turn-on”, that I can live it. But then we have Lucky Star, the people who are watching it will already know all the otaku words but still a.f.k. are translating them into unfitting english words. When they translated lolicon to pedophile I shift-deleted their releases and redownloaded LS with another fansub. Not to mention that a.f.k. really are afk most of the time.

Watching most of those you mentioned above, with the exception of Genshiken (never even attempted to get into it – one of these days I might give it a shot) and KimiKiss (no desire to watch yuri-less harem antics). Minami-ke is awesome, Clannad is good fun, and I’m enjoying Goshuushousama Ninomiya-kun, albeit to my absolute horror. I think I’ve been corrupted somewhere along the line…

Disagree with you on Blue Drop though. I’m enjoying it immensely, and in fact am sat here an hour past my bed time (since starting work, bed time is suddenly a relevant term again) waiting for the torrent to download. There’s even a chance of genuine, honest to goodness, unequivocal yuri. Fingers crossed.

Really really really want to see Byousoku 5cm. Holding out for the DVD.

Oh, and on the Kashimashi front – I just bought it from one of Amazon’s marketplace sellers. So much more trustworthy than Amazon.co.uk itself these days, sadly. Order from “The Book Depository” or similar and you’ll usually get your book in 4 days or so.

Finally – on a.f.k – yeah, I kind of gave up on them over Lucky Star as well. Releases slowed down, and there were some odd translation mistakes, including some peculiar spelling and grammar on occasion. For Clannad I’m sticking with SS-Eclipse. Nice, solid, regular subs.

I’m following Minami-ke, Kimikiss, Blue Drop, and Genshiken this season.

    Thoughts:

Minami-ke keeps reminding me of Ichigo Mashimaro, mainly because of the middle girl. She’s the weirdest thing I’ve ever seen, it’s pretty funny. As for your idea of yuri-incest, it had me bursting out laughing. Since Minami-ke was created for the male audience, I guess they could have a bent like that, but still. I’m going to stay away from that idea, lol.

Kimikiss Rouge is not very deep, but it is kind of fun to watch, kind of like watching Lucky Star back in the day after coming home and tired- you don’t have to really think to watch it. The only qualm I have is with the title- sounds like a lipstick or something.

Blue Drop: I’ve been trying to watch this, but I’m starting to lose patience. I’ll stick with it, though. Who knows, it might pick up.

Genshiken: I absolutely LOVE this anime, especially the second season. The opening is hilarious as hell, and I love Ogiue- so in denial it’s hilarious. There’s not really any yuri in this series at all, but I guess if you squint like crazy you could pair up Saki and Ohno- they’ve got some interesting interaction during the first season, especially when Ohno gets drunk and latches onto Saki- but actually, I kind of like their interactions with their boyfriends.

    Cheers

So What anime do I watch for some good.. yuri vibes & goodness??
    Anyone care to answer?

    @ Manami:
Well, Blue Drop is the yuri anime of the season, but it’s quite slow. I like it, yuribou doesn’t seem to.
Kodomo no Jikan has loliyuri as one of the girls fancies the lead girl.
And the softer purple-haired twin in Clannad occasionally comes out with some ‘interesting’ lines – these are just funny though.

Manami, are you only looking for new anime series? In your post it seems that you are looking for any anime containing yuri vibes and goodness, and not only new ones for this season. If that is the case I can come up with alot of suggestions. :)

I’m glad that someone else feels the same way as me about Blue Drop, interesting idea but executed in a boring way, the last episode I watched nearly put me to sleep.

Minami-ke, slow paced but starting to grow on me, and I have to agree with Chilipop that Kana makes the show interesting. The only yuri-incest I would find interesting would be a Kana/Chiaki pairing, what better way could Chiaki validate Kana’s need for sisterly acceptance than give her a little roll in the sack.

Hmm technically, isn’t Blue Drop the only yuri anime this season? The first episode wasnt too bad, the second episode put me in pause-play-pause mode. Its like when I watch Gundam, I drift in and out, and have to backtrack on the technical mumbo jumbo.

Goshuushousama Ninomiya-kun is… terrible. Oh its god awful, but I still one of the series I download regularly. The animation is bad, characters are dull (their personalities are so outrageous, its dull), and yeah you’re right! This is girls bravo all over again! The main girl even has the big hooters and long pink hair. Btw the first season of Girls Bravo was good, the second season was ruined cause that dumb blonde guy had way to much airtime, and his annoyance level was needlessly increased, by a lot…

Everyone should check out the new Yuri manga being scanslated entitled: Girl Friends , its hauls a majestic amount of assets.

    omg minami-ke wins so much.

god, haruka’s seiyuu is freaking ultimate: she melts me.

too bad she’s probably 30. meh.. one can dream can’t one?

Yes, the “girlfriends” manga is awesome – I think it is by one of the artists who regularly contributes to Yuri Hime magazine.

See lililicious if you can find more of his stuff…

Ah, definitely thirded on “Girlfriends” it is indeed by one of Yuri Hime’s regular contributors – Morinaga Milk – who has done plenty of other quality work. Lililicious has plenty of translated. Looks like the series currently only has eight chapters written (they’re summarised on the yurizuki.net descriptions site), but it’s good stuff. Glad someone’s decided to scanlate it!

Is it me, or are there more scanlation teams out there working on yuri titles these days? Could it be that the good word of yuri is spreading?

I was wondering what did you think of the yuri scenes in the ikenie fujin series by hirohisa onikubo?
